The Master of Arts allows students to acquire the knowledge and techniques required for a better grasp of contemporary realities, giving meaning to the intellectual wealth created by mankind over the centuries.
It offers a wide range of disciplines, from historical studies to theoretical approaches in the human sciences, languages and literature. As a result, it offers you the opportunity to practise the interdisciplinarity approach proper to a study of the arts.
The Master of Arts degree offers training in the following disciplines:
At the end of the first year, students decide in which discipline they will complete their dissertation and whether to choose a Master of Arts worth 90 ECTS credits or a Master of Arts with specialisation worth 120 ECTS credits.
Specialisation programs are study plans worth 30 ECTS credits that lead to a Master of Arts with Specialisation. Through an interdisciplinary approach, they offer students the possibility, as the case may be, to deepen their knowledge in a particular field or to acquire a first experience of research or work in a professional environment.

French and/or the language of the discipline studied. Recommended level: C1.
Candidates admitted to registration at the University of Lausanne and who are holders of a Bachelor of Arts degree of the University of Lausanne, or a Bachelor of Arts degree of another Swiss or foreign university recognised by UNIL and judged to be equivalent, are admitted without conditions to the Master of Arts degree course, if they choose to continue for their Master’s degree the discipline(s) studied for their Bachelor’s degree.
Students who change discipline between the Bachelor’s degree and the Master’s degree, or are holders of a Swiss or foreign Bachelor’s degree recognised by UNIL in another orientation, or awarded by a University of Applied Sciences (UAS)*, may be admitted to the Master’s degree on the basis of their personal case files. They may be required to complete a catch-up programme.
* The holders of a Bachelor’s degree awarded by a UAS must prove that they satisfy the conditions for admission to a Master’s degree course in their own type of educational institution.
Applications must be submitted to the Admissions Department before the deadline.
Final enrolment dates
It is possible for students to begin the degree course in either the autumn or the spring semester (autumn semester : 30 April, spring semester : 30 November).
Candidates needing a visa to study in Switzerland must apply for enrolment at least two months prior to the deadlines indicated above.
Thanks to the possibility of completing a work placement, this course offers you the chance to familiarise yourself with various areas of the arts (museums, theatres, festivals and foundations), communications, the media, events, translation, publishing, archives, cultural mediation or international organisations.
These assets are greatly appreciated and allow our alumni to move into roles such as teacher, journalist, communications officer, documentary production manager, cultural mediator, translator, web and new media projects officer, arts festival programme coordinator, or book and image digitisation specialist.
